The Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating what sparked a fire that damaged a Clayton-area home.

Crews were dispatched to 501 South Mead Drive around 8:30 pm Friday. A detached garage caught fire and began spreading to the home.  The homeowner was away from their residence when the fire broke out. A neighbor was able to use his truck to pull a boat away from the burning garage and also kick in the front door to the home to rescue the victim’s dogs.

Assistant Johnston County Fire Marshal D.B. Wallace said the fire does not appear to be suspicious. The garage was destroyed. The home sustained minimal damage.

The Clayton, Thanksgiving and Wilson’s Mills Fire Departments responded. Johnston County EMS also stood by.
